True Blood

I have been watching True Blood Season 1 1 disc at at a time. i like it. I understand the hype. It started out ok for me, but as it goes alomng I am finding myself really get into it. I know its HBO and everything but I was surprised how much sex is in it. I mean good grief, theres just as much wild sex scenes as there are blood considering its about vampires. But nowadays, love and vampires is what people want to see. But the characxters are compelling and they do a great job of doing the tried and true cliffhanger ending for each episode.

Movie Review Quick Sketch: The Princess and the Frog

To say that I have been waiting for this movie is like saying Ralphie just kinda wanted a bee bee gun. I dreamed of one day becoming a Disney animator. I watched specials on animation and everytime they would show an animator in the studio drawing I was pause the VCR (I'm dating myself I know) and just look at their work. i would rewind them and watch them over and over. Later, I dreamed of one day making a Disney movie and making one with a black princess, a black fairy tale. I never knew if I fast forwarded about 15 years that I would not be nanywhere neat Disney and they would make the black princess feature without me. Okay, about the movie....

Disney hand drawn animation is back!! yes!!! If you are a fan like I am, than you have to see this movie. Disney has returned to form with all the catchy songs, the bright beautiful colors and memorable characters that made them special. And the animation, oh the animation is as fantastic as it ever was making us believe that drawings on a page where living breathing life forms. I think the time away, although nerve wracking as it may have been, did some good. It made the formula that we became accustomed to become fresh again. it made us appreciate what we missed. Disney never cslacked on animation, it was the storytelling that got away and how the story was told. Disney has taken a somewhat familiar story and made it with a predominantly African-American cast and set it in beautiful retro New Orleans. Compete with jazz, gumbo, Cajuns and voodoo. And it is all done tastefully and cleverly. It is part of the story and it works...well. Go see it...twice! We need these kinds of movies for us, for our children and we need more of them. So we need them to be profitable to show them that CG is not the only way to make an animated film, and white people aren't the only central characters that everbody wants to see all the time. You will come out of this movie loving the characters, especially Ray the Cajun lightning bug who steals the show. You will laugh, you'll tap your feet and sing, you may even cry...if you have a heart anyway.

Quick Sketch Movie Review: Avatar

Its hard to describe something that engulfs you and sucks you in the way that James Cameron's Avatar did to me. Much has already been said about its visuals, and its story, reminiscent of Dances with Wolves. You should already know the plot by now, so I won't bore you with that, but unless you have read the play by play on Wiki or IMDb, I can assure you that whatever you've heard, it is way more than that. I don't think the praise has been too great, and I think the criticism has been a little unfair. I try to judge movies on how they make me feel. This movie made feel like a child, not in the way that someone patronizes you with words that insult your intelligence, but in a way that makes me remember what it was like before I knew everything. Before I knew how they did everything in a movie, and had seen everything that a movie was referencing. I found myself wanting to be there, and putting myself in the shoes of the characters. The visual style, the story, everything that this movie was about and what it was "about" made me think like an adult and feel like a child. I think the casting of Wes Studi as the head of the Na'vi tribe was Cameron's way of saying, yes I know, now look at this! So I don't think it tries to hide from the nods to "Native American meets pale-face" story comparison.

I saw this movie in 3D which I think it was made to be seen, and there were so many things I had never seen before. The mixing of CG and live actors has been done, but not like this; American outsider going to a native land and becoming accepted by the natives has been done, but not quite like this, and the list goes on. I highly reccommend this movie because of the way that the story is told and the non-conventional ways that old story elements and devices are spun and given to you a new way. That, to me is what we need. That is what we want in a world of CG cartoons that are a series of pop-culture references and remakes of movies that were made in the same generation as the audience they are made for again.

Quick Sketch Movie Review: Paper Heart

Jeez I am so behind. i've seen so many movies I can't keep up with myself. paper heart is a really sweet movie. If you don't mind sweet movies. its billed as a documentary about love, which it is....and a love story, which it is as well in a way. The movie follows Charlyne Yi (Knocked Up) as she interviews pople acsoss the country about love, how they feel about it and their experiences in hopes of understanding it herself since she claims to never had experienced it herself. This makes for some really cute stories that are dramatized very crudely with paper cutout puppets. But its crude in a cute way. When the "love story" of Charlyne and Michale Cera (Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist) I found myself more interested in the interviews because they were so diverse, but it was still sweet because both of the "characters" are such characters. Charlyne Yi is a very quirky individual and has a presence for being such a shy person. But all of this is part of the story. Recommended even if you're not into love stories, which I am.

Movie Review:Ninja Assasin

I'm going to start posting movie reviews and doing a quick 3-5 minute sketch based on it. Seeing as I need something to flex my creative muscles and practice drawing and I am obsessed with movies this seems like the perfect avenue.

Ninja Assasin is a fun movie. Anything more expected of it is meaningless I think, and the trailers were pretty accurate in giving you what you were in for. The body count and the blood in my opinion is more than any slasher movie and if that is your thing, then this movie will not disappoint. Someones head gets chopped in half within the first 5 minutes and more gore is to follow in the opening sequence..the main title splatters acroos the screen in blood just to let you know, get ready, we are not holding back. The fight sequences were cool and it was interesting to see a movie that has the ambition to mix realistic gore effects with the over-the top deaths and action of n old school Hong Kong action movie. The kind that Kill Bill paid homage to. Only differnce is there were no stumps spurting blood with tongue in cheek unrealistic fashion. I have not mentioned the plot at all, because I think its not worth mentioning. Guy learns to be a Ninja, they kill his lady friend, he wants revenge....so basically the same plot as every other Van Damme, Seagal movie of the 80's and 90's. But those movies were fun, and to me, this was too, if you have a strong stomach for endless dismembered bodies. cheers

Hawkman sketch with a dash of color

Figured I'd finish this up some so to speak. I didn;t erase the pencil lines and I gave myself a time limit on the colors so its rough. But I like the rough look on this piece.

I loved this character as a kid...

When I was about 8 or 9 years old I got a Hawkman figure fir christmas. I didn't know anything about him except he was a comic character who somehow was affiliated with Superman...and he looked really cool. He had a button on his back that made his wings flap too. A couple of years ago I tried to read a Hawkman trade from the library and his origin was confusing and too complex and I could not get into it at all. But the character is just designed well. Well, ok I did a quick sketch in my sketchbook and all my childhood hawk-love came back. I might do a little mini story of my own, my way just for fun. Don't worry, I'll post it if it happens.

The awesomest weekend Ever!

Ok, I am blessed with the greatest family and friends anyone could ask for. This Friday I was on my way to a social with my wife for her job...or so I thought. I walk into the place and I hear "Surprise!" I was so caught off guard and not expecting it that I kinda heard it said, but it didn't register. I thought, Oh, this is a social and its a party for someone? For real. It really threw me for a loop. Someone had to pull me inside and tell me that the party was for me. I hadn't realized all my friends and family were there standing around clapping and whatnot. I was in shock for about 20 minutes. It was the most successful surprise ever. It was not telegraphed in any way and I felt super special and loved. I mean really, it was surreal. I haven't had a party like that since i was about 8 years old. But it has never been a problem, I don't think I deserve anything like that. I'm always taken care of by my peeps, but this....this was unforgettable. Thanks to everyone who was there and even if you were asked but couldn't come I am eternally grateful. it also made me realize what a crummy friend I am. I don't keep up with people like I should because I get so busy. But people still come through for me. Awesome. What a blessing. Oh, there's a Random dramatization of it for your viewing pleasure.

Rooney Takes Center stage

Ok, I am very, very close to being done with the Rooney solo mini comic. It started out as a excercise to get ready for the next chapter of Lil Dude but evoloved into its own animal. I had a super basic story and I just had such a great time with it I just kept going and now it is a 16 (I think) page story that is basically one huge fight sequence. Thats all I'm going to reveal now. Ok, really there is not much else TO reveal, but we get a peek inside what goes on behind the scenes with Rooney when Lil Dude and the gang isn't around. This is just a quick preview here. Inked, but not cleaned up and polished.
