Holiday Specials

This is an article I wrote for my office newsletter. I put a lot of thought in to it and wanted to share it with everyone.

******************************

Tis’ the season for all of us to share with our families, eat, be merry and dive into the treacherous lines at the department stores that become more like waiting to ride a roller coaster at Disney World than waiting to check out. Aside from the obvious things we all think of when you think holidays and the month of December, the forgotten gem that was always one of my favorite parts of the Holidays as a tike was the Animated Christmas specials. Of course you may call me partial because animation has always been close to my heart, but there was a time when even though it had been on last year and every year before that, everyone still talked about how much they were looking forward to seeing Rudolph, or Frosty or the Grand Puba of Christmas animated warmth, Charlie Brown. These shows are timeless and that is why the networks can still show them today to our children and their children and they will still hold their value. Sure we may have Shrek and Pixar and all the CG animation that makes good ol’ cell animation seem like cave drawings now, but the simplicity of the stories, the music, and the characters that makes us laugh and cry and forget that these are nothing more than drawings on paper or foam figures. Who can say they don’t feel the drive of Rudolph and Yukon Cornelius as they trek to the North Pole and Hermey the Elf whose dream is to become a dentist.
I would always ask my mother when the shows would come on and I would make myself a reminder to be in front of the television with a cup of hot cocoa with mini marshmallows, heated in the microwave. Ok, so it wasn’t all that long ago, but the memories are still sweet and they are vivid. For a time there was a pullout calendar in the Courier Journal that marked all the airings of all the holiday shows. Now they all come on early in the month of December and sometimes closer to Thanksgiving. The first time I missed A Charlie Brown Christmas during the holidays it didn’t register at first I was so stunned. I remember trying to find out when it came on, still early in December I thought, and I found that it had already aired. At the time it was like my best friend had moved away and I would not see him for another year. I guess they are following the trend of grocery and department stores that put out Christmas decorations before the jack-o-lanterns have even started to rot. It’s as if the network execs are saying “lets get these old things out of the way, kids only care about Spongebob and Dora anyway.” This makes them easy to miss if you aren’t carefully looking out for them which lets me know they aren’t getting the appreciation they deserve. You can turn to basic cable and see the Grinch quite a few times during December and around Thanksgiving, but now the Chuck Jones classic animated special shares air time with the live action Jim Carrey feature film. Without turning this into a campaign for classic animation, there is something about the way that Looney Tunes pioneering animator Chuck Jones could breathe life and personality into a character that makes his Grinch so sinister, so evil you want to jump through the tv and hurt him when he takes those presents from Whoville. “Mr. Grinch! How Could you!” Even when you know he has a change of heart and gives them all back at the end of the story.
To this day I still get misty eyed when Frosty turns to a puddle of water when he loses his hat. Shouting Happy Birthday when he puts on that hat is just so cute and memorable you can’t help but give him a pass for smoking that pipe around the kids. Of course Christmas is not complete until you watch the classic of all classics, A Charlie Brown Christmas. I don’t mean the newer updated version, I mean the classic, muttled color, heartwarming story of poor unlucky Charlie Brown and that horrible tree that you just gotta love. Charlie Brown Christmas is a staple at Christmas time like Egg Nog and annoying relatives. Ironically, its so entertaining to see poor Charlie being mistreated and taken advantage of but yet, he and Linus still manage to teach us the true meaning of Christmas. My favorite growing up was the lesser known Twas’ the Night Before Christmas about a clockmaker that plans to greet Santa with a song when the giant clock strikes 12. A mouse that doesn’t believe in Santa sabotages the clock and adventure ensues to save Christmas! The songs in this special are so catchy that I can still sing them all word for ward despite its airing being harder to find than a Nintendo Wii last Christmas. The coolest thing about it is there is a scene with an African American kid who loves to draw and draws a picture of Santa. And his name just happens to be Randy.
There are many other animated shows that I haven’t mentioned like Garfield’s Christmas, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, and quite a few others, but they all deserve mention and should be shared with our kids and even if you watch them alone I guarantee it will make you feel like a kid again when the stresses of the grown-up world was just something you heard about.

CAGE and Mr. president Elect. not necessarily in that order.

Hello all, it has been a while since my last post. I have been busy being a daddy and future husband and oh, yeah. Witnessing HISTORY. I can't stop smiling. God is good and I am extremely excited about being a part of this. And moving on to completely unrelated toics, This Cage sketch I had the idea for a while back. I figured it would be cool to do a rtro 70's style Luke Cage, aka Power Man. My take on Iron Fist is coming shortly too so keep a watch out for that. Here is the rough sketch to rough inks to colors.

First Preview page of the Lil Dude graphic novel

I have wanted to make this happen for a long time. Now I am making it happen. Stay tuned. I will post sketches and a couple of preview pages. Not too many now, I don't want to spoil it. But the book will come out. The release date is TBA and I will let the world know in every way possible.
I have removed the preview page of my comic from this blog and from my myspce page. If anyone is actually looking at either. the reason is that I got some good advice from my fiancee. As artists we are sensitive about our work, some so much so that they are afraid to show anyone for fear of any sort vof commentary at all. But I think whenyou are trying to dive into a entertainment medium like cartooning or comics, you need to be able to take criticism. You need to be able to let as many people as possible see your work. I am constantly striving to get better. And in doing this project, the comic, I have grown alot as a person and as an artist. You really learn how passionate you are about your work when you have a child and you have much less time for yourself. It has made me realize that I really do want this and I want it badly. Which brings me back to the page. I have been working on my book now for quite some time and I have watched my self grow in the process. My earlier pages are kind of crappy compared to some of my later stuff aftwr I have become more comfortable with the process and my characters and found my voice alot more. When you spend a lot of time, as artists know, looking at your own stuff you start to hate it, and or you start to become numb to it. My problem is that I was so excited about getting the thing done that I was less concerned about quality. And thats not good. I have some really great pages to show and you will be seeing them in my book in the next couple of months. The page I posted was not quality and it was not the best work I am capabkle of, and it was not indicative of what is to come in this book,. My fiance helped me to realize that. It was tough to hear, and I resisted at first making excuses and the whole nine, but so true and I am blessed to have somebody that can be honest with me and help me be the best I can be. You hear all the time that family is not the best to critique your work, but sometimes, you have a special person that you can rely on to push you and make you better. So the first preview page is yet to come lets say and it will be good. I will probably be going back and redoing some of my early pages too. Which is tough, but ultimately I want my work to be my best work, not just finished. Stay tuned...

When a toad gets struck by lightning...

I saw this friggin cool little ad with a Storm pic that I could tell was a J. Scott Campbell piece. (Where the heck is this J. Scott Campbell Marvel book anyway, jeez J! Love your work, bro, but c'mon man!) Anywho, it inspired me to do this. Plus I like Storm and she should be waaaaay more of a bada-double than what she is in the Marvel U. Well, she may be nowadays but I haven't been reading X-Men.

punishment

Garth Ennis's Punisher Max Series 1-60 in my opinion is the greatest run in comics, hands down, bar none. Pick up the back issues, the trades, something. Genius. I wasn't that big of a fan until I started this series. Plus I am working on my shadows and spot blacks. I need a lot of work, so this was just an excercise. But here you go. Big Frank Castle

Its a flying man!

I freakin loved this movie as a kid. I watched the making of special on HBO when this movie was coming out. I had the Movie special magazine. And I went out and had my mom get me a Rocketeer comic. (Little did I know how hard to find those things were.) And in honor of the recently passed Dave Stevens. This is my rendition of the Rocketeer. Its been a while since I posted last so it felt good to get on the pc and coloe this thing up.

BatMania

Everybody else has got the fever, I'm no exception. Loved the movie (other than it was just so darn long.) I just read The Batman Detective Trade by Paul Dini. man was that awesome. A new complete story in each issue. So cool. Anyway it inspired this Wacom tablet drawing of ol' Bats. And this sketchbook brush pen drawing too. Thanks to hydrogenhighway.com city image in the bg. I am working on my backgrounds and architecture. It is the achilles heel of many aspiring cartoonists. I won't let it be mine. But..until then I will cheat in this drawing.

God of War

I love this darn blogging thing. I finally have an outlet for my random sketches I do all the time and a reason to finish them up. Well this quick Kratos sketch I did in the car in about 5 minutes or so. I inked it with my brush pen in about 2 minutes and I took about a half hour to color it. I think it turned out aiight. It has the quick rough look that I like sometimes and I think its fitting to the character. I just love the character by the way and I love the game too. Peace out. God of War kicks booty!

Son of Odin

I dont know exactly when it happened but sometime about a year ago I became a big Thor fan. I never read the comics or was much interested in him back in my early comic fandom. I think it was when I saw the conept art of the new Olivier Coipel drawn series. Aw man. I became a Thorite. Well I started working on this drawing a while back, like months and months back. But I only finished within the past couple months. So here it is, I figured this was the perfect platform to show it. Whaddyathink? I think its Randy cartoonesque.

This aint Six Flaggs

Wsup errbody. I did this little caricature of my cousin for his birthday. I don't have that traditional caricature formula they use in Amusement Parks,I just kind odf draw in my style. You'd have to know him to get it but I think its funny. And I think it turned out pretty decent. Putting things up here is such a good exercise for my drawing skills and I love it. Oh by the way, I know its old now but I just saw Anchorman for the first time last night. Hot da*n that movie is funny! TTFN good people.

WACOM sketch

Its funny because I always seem to be a generation behind on technology. Whenever the new Madden or NBA Live comes out, I'm just getting the version from the year before. ( Because its cheap) Now everybody in comics is getting the Cintiq. I am getting used to drawing more freehand with my WACOM. I think its great I color with it and do little fill in correction type stuff now with it but thats about it. / I'm trying to get to where I can draw with the thing. I'll never get rid of my paper becaue I just like the feel, but its a useful skill. Here is one of my first all WACOM sketches.

Process

I figured it would be cool to post one of my original drawings for a strip. This is the original sketch for today's strip. I draw them usually on illustration board with a 4h or HB pencil. One of those deals with no eraser, just the metal topper. I rule it all out so that it will be the right dimensions and everything and I essentially end up erasing the lines becaue I put them back in on the computer. I inked with Microns up until about two weeks ago, I have been using a crow quill pen and ink lately. I forget which kind right now. Oh well. It is drawn on half of a 11x17 illustration board. These are for sale by the way. But now, the original is inked and the pencil lines have been erased. As artists, its always neat to see the original art before its inked or digitally colored or what have you. Go see the strip inked, cleaned up and digitally lettered by the way, if you didn't get here from there already.

Hulk

I did this ballpoint pen sketch in church. Don't worry I could still hear the word while I was scribblin in my lil sketchbook. I love drawing the Hulk for some reason. I usually go straight to the green guy when I'm just doodling. He's just a fun character to draw. I also do alot of Spider-man too. There have been so many different artists interpretations of him. I am loving Ed McGuinness''s version in the new Red Hulk series. I love his style. I'll get there one day . LOL I'll just keep practicing and trying to get better. The Hulk movie is freaking awesome by the way. I am one of the view peopl that didn''t think the first one was that bad. It needed improvement by far, but it was solid, to me. Ok, now that I've seen the new one, the first one now sucks to me. They nailed it from Ed Norton's potrayal of Banner to the action sequences it was all good. Thank You Marvel for and Louis Letterier for doing it right!

sketches

Part of the main purpose for me having this blog was to post spme sketches regularly to show what kinds of things go through my head and o show my versatility I guess.

Here is a sketch I admit is about a month old. It is for a postponed project I wanted to do about a crazy, drunken rabbit. Kind of a rags to riches story. I still might do it, so stay tuned. My first character I made up whenI was probably 7 or 8 years old was Randy the Rabbit who later became Randy the Hare because people kept saying I was copying Roger Rabbit. I wasn't of course, but hey. So I have a special place in my heart for rabbits and I told myself I wanted to revisit that and go back to myt rooots at some point.

Tuesday, June 24, 2008

I just finished Thursdays trip. Its late and I am tired and the baby has not gone to sleep yet, I did alot of the computer stuff actually with him on my lap. Until he wanted to fuss of course. but that made getting it done that much more satisfying. Thats it for now. Peace

Crow Quill Pens

Today I did my second strip with a crow quill pen. It is in no way a new pen, Ive had the thing forever because I heard or read that some artist I liked used one. So I decided to crack the thing open for a change and try it out. I am actually liking the crow quill. It takes a little longer than my beloved microns, but it has an obviously more organic look.
Be sure and check out the strip, link to it, tell all your friends. A brotha is working hard to make this thing good and as proffessional as I can. I'm trying to step my game up more with each strip. I'm watching Semi-Pro on DVD as I write and its pretty funny. Same old Will Ferrel schtick, which I like. Poor Andre 3000. I am the hugest Outkast fan ever. My all time favorite group. But that man could not act for crap. He cannot shake that deep south Atlanta accent for anything, which is hilarious. Oh yeah! Go see Kung-Fu Panda! If you are an artist and like animation, to not be a Pixar movie it is the most beautiful. The way the color schemes change to fit the tone of the story. Aw man, its gorgeous. And its funny too. Until next time folks, keep the peace.

The First post of many to come

This is long overdue. I will definitely be enjoying sharing my thoughts and goofy cartoons of the day on my blog. My webstrip, http://lildudecomics.comicgenesis.com has slowed down quite a bit but I am not gone, I have not quit/ Quite the contrary actually. Since my life has changed in quite a tremendous way, my strip will be reflecting this. I was feeling a little creatively limited to the four panel format anyway. I just have so many ideas and always wnat to to do so many different things. So I will. But I am in the processes of revamping the whole thing. New styles, new character designs and the whole 9. So watch for it, and I will be posting my sketches I do too.
